Circa 1780 – 1820 silver relic holder. The relics have no monetary value and come with the piece and are all ex ossibus and relate to:
St Paul,
St Peter app,
St Bartholomew app,
St Jacob app,
St Andrew app,
St Simon app,
St Matthew,
St Philip app,
St Judas Thadeus app, and
St Emigdeo/Emygdius
All the relics relate to apostles with the exception of St Emigdeo. The cult of Saint Emygdius is ancient, documented by churches dedicated to him since the eighth century with the translation of his relics from the catacomb of ‘Sant’ Emidio alla Grotte’ to the crypt of the cathedral happened probably around the year 1000 under Bernardo II, bishop of Ascoli Piceno. Of particular interest is that in 1703, a violent earthquake occurred in the region but did not affect the city of Ascoli Piceno. The city’s salvation was attributed to Emygdius and since that time has been invoked as protector against earthquakes.
